A problematic moment is a moment, typically a moment of silence, experienced by a group that marks a disruption to a particular
discourse of values, beliefs, assumptions, and affect being constructed by the group. Video playback of those moments enables group members to reflect on the meaning of those moments and to generate ideas about how
dominant ways of talking and being in the group are silencing other ways. The video playback also allows group members to notice habitual responses in moments of stress, to assess the effect of those responses, and
to change behavior appropriately. For example, a group dominated by managers may in subtle ways tend to disregard key data about issues of safety provided by engineers. The Problematic Moment Approach may help to
identify and change this unnoticed pattern of behavior.
